Artist Biography

      Casting Crowns
Casting Crowns Photo Casting Crowns began as a student worship band in Daytona Beach, FL in 1999. After 2 years of serving at First Baptist Daytona Beach, God called Mark Hall (lead vocal), Juan DeVevo (guitar and vocals), Melodee DeVevo (vocals and violin), Hector Cervantes (guitar and vocals), and Darren Hughes (production manager) to Eagle's Landing First Baptist Church in McDonough, GA in October of 2001. After arriving here, the Lord led Chris Huffman (bass guitar), a former student from FBC, Daytona, and Megan Garrett (keyboard, vocals, accordion), to join the band immediately. Then about a year later, Andy Williams (drummer), joined the group. There, you have Casting Crowns.

At the core of Casting Crowns is Mark Hall, a man who never would have thought leading a band into the wilds of the business of music would enter into his calling. His place, he thought, was to serve young people.

The pieces fell together quickly for Miller's new venture and the band it is introducing to the world. Casting Crowns entered the studio earlier this year with Miller and Chapman serving as co-producers, and the self-titled result is a rich-sounding edgy-pop record that refuses to shy away from the sometimes hard-to-hear truths presented in Hall's lyrics.

And even though Casting Crowns is currently in a whirlwind of activity the likes of which they probably couldn't have dreamed, they're not about to take their eyes off the fundamental message they wish to share. "I want to shake people up and help them see that Jesus is not a religion, and God is not a book," Hall says. "You can't pray to a book and you can't draw strength from an idea or standard.

"If there's no relationship with Jesus as a person to you, you're in trouble." It's about life, not religion. It's about relationships, not books. Timely ideas not many of us think about, much less in that way. Casting Crowns is what we need to hear at exactly the time we need to hear it.

4 Stars Impressive! July 15th, 2004
Reviewer: Jonathan Mercier from Cornwall

Being a hardcore Pillar fan, contemporary music isn't the type of music I like the best... When I visited my Christian bookstore about a month ago, looking for a new Christian rock CD to listen to, the (old) lady that was on shift at the time showed me this CD and said "They've had a #1 song for a very long time in the US, and it's truly a great CD"... So I took it in my hands and looked at it, pretending to be interested, while thinking in my head "What does this (old) lady know in music, anyways!! haha!" So I get home that night, and I tune in to Christian radio to hear the Rock Block, but before it started, the contemporary countdown was finishing and their song "Who Am I?" had the #1 spot.. so I'm like "Hey! Let's listen to this"... and after hearing it, I had shivers going down my spine... If there is a song that really touched me deep inside, it had to be that song... and that song alone is worth buying the CD. After all the stupid things we do, who are WE that God would care to even know our name?.... Other good songs on the CD are "American Dream", "What If His People Prayed" and the #1 single "If We Are The Body"... The only song I did not particularly enjoy is "Praise You With The Dance"... but that's me personally.......

3 Stars Casting Crowns - Casting Crowns July 16th, 2004

This is a very nice album. No wonder its in the top list everywhere. Lyrics are very practical and the melodies are good. If you are a Mercy Me fan, then you'll love this album.

5 Stars GREAT album July 16th, 2004
Reviewer: Eric from Texas

This is one of those albums you could listen to two or three times in a row and still wanna hear every song. Theres no mid to end of album filler songs, which I hate. Their songs elicit intense emotion and remind us what it really all about. I love artists who don't hold back and water things down.

5 Stars Awsome!!! July 16th, 2004
Reviewer: Phillip from San Antonio

As a person always looking for great new christitan bands, I came across Casting Crowns early this spring, and have really enjoy their music. While they don't have a truely distinct sound, their lyrics completely make up for that. From the rock and roll sound of "What If His People Prayed", to the thought provoking "If We Are The Body", to the worshipful "Who Am I", Casting Crowns does a wonderful job of mixing up their sound, and adding the worship in this disk, making it worthy of the top of the charts rankings it has been recieving.

Reviewer: Everest from San Carlos, CA

this is sooo great of an album, its very inspirational and we have played some of their songs for church! This CD did not leave my CD player for awhile, many months in fact!!! but anyways, i will let you decide because it doesn't need people to say how good it is, it can do that on its own!

5 Stars Great CD! July 17th, 2004
Reviewer: Anonymous

Being a teenager in a wonderful youth group, I always strive to find great, inspirational music. Once I heard Casting Crowns' first single, I knew that it was perfect for youth. I had no idea that they were a group for their youth group. It was amazing. This group isn't only just for youth- it's for everyone!

5 Stars Amazing CD July 18th, 2004
Reviewer: Anonymous

This is an awsome cd. I love the songs "If we are the body" and "Who am I" that they play on the radio, but what really surprised me were the other great songs that I'd never heard of like "Voice of Truth" and "Here I Go Again." This is an amazing cd that everyone should buy.

4 Stars Good but Obvious July 21st, 2004
Reviewer: Kimi from USA

I really enjoy the lyrics, and melodies of this CD and group, but there is a downside to them. Their lyrics are basically stating the obvious, but they are still challenging. The harmonies and vocals are awesome but not overly original. But I still would recommend them to anyone who likes pop/contemporary/worshipful and anyone else. They are an awesome group.
