Mark Hall

Your Own Jesus
Too many people inherit somebody else’s Jesus, mimicking what they see in their family, friends, and pastor rather than facing the need to find their own Jesus. If we exist on someone else’s faith, we will miss the spiritual vitality and joy that comes from our own journey and in times of trouble we will find an empty well to draw from.

Casting Crowns lead singer Mark Hall asks, Do you have your own Jesus? Why do you feel close to God one minute and so far away the next? Why does your faith seem empty? Why is it so easy to compromise with the world? Perhaps it's because we have merely inherited someone else's Jesus, relying on what we've seen and heard from family, friends, or pastors.

A true storyteller and a teacher with a heart for ministry, Mark Hall traces the downward spiral caused by spiritual compromise with the world, and then charts the upward road to wholeness and health that comes when we claim our very own Jesus.

You need to discover your own Jesus. The real Jesus. The one who wants you to be honest, committed, and uncompromising. The one who is waiting to have a relationship with you.

Move past imitating a religion to experiencing a relationship that is vibrant, personal, and fulfilling.

I want my own Jesus! March 1, 2010
Reviewer: Rollalyn Ruis from Pensacola, FL

I first heard about this book on Twitter. I had mixed impressions about the book based on the title and author alone: “Your Own Jesus” by Casting Crowns’ Mark Hall. I thought, “Your Own Jesus?” We don’t get to determine who Jesus is. He is who He is, whether we like it or not. The author is Mark Hall, singer of Casting Crowns. I like a handful of their songs . In fact, they are some of my favorite songs, but as a whole, I think they’re a little too “pop-corny” for me. Recently, my church displayed the book in the “New Media” section. I figured that it wouldn’t hurt to read it. I noticed the subtitle: “A God Insistent on Making it Personal”. I then understood the whole title. As I read the introduction, Mark Hall asks these questions: “Is your walk with Jesus Christ characterized by personal faith, personal prayer, personal study, and personal disciplines? Or do you get by with the overflow from more mature Christians? Do you have your own Jesus?” I then realized there may be more meat in this book than I had thought. The book is personal, easy to read, applicable, and relatable. He includes Scripture and recounts different times in his life when he finds his faith or when there was growth in his spiritual life. He also includes stories of other people who are find their own personal relationship with Christ. I’m not sure if Hall wrote all of the stories, but some of them were written with drama and some surprise elements which were very good!. Because of some of the subject matter in the book, I would recommend this book for mature teens. He brings up the fact that one cannot be saved and live a life that isn’t God-honoring. Even though works don’t get a person to Heaven, a Christian must bear fruit as proof of their salvation. However, he uses the parable of the prodigal son in a wrong way. The prodigal son isn’t meant to represent a “carnal Christian” there’s no such thing! See Romans 6:1-23, 15-16; I John 3:8-10. The prodigal son is a picture of the unsaved. Yes, Christians can/will fall, but their lives shouldn’t be characterized by sin. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised and I enjoyed the book. I’d recommend this book for individual and group studies.

A BOOK TO OWN NOT TO BORROW! August 2, 2009
                       Reviewer: Donna from Pace, Florida

YOUR OWN JESUS isn’t a book that I would suggest only listening to on audio, or borrowing from a library. It is a book of substance that should be read, then read again, and really absorbed. The “discussion guide” that follows, is full of statements and questions that will cause real examination of where you are in your personal relationship with Jesus Christ, our Savior. The guide is as valuable as the text itself. It is very apparent that Mark Hall understands how vital it is to have an individual, personal relationship with God. One cannot depend on someone else’s experiences to sustain them through the storms of life. Definitely, there is a difference between “weight-bearing belief” and “mental assent to certain facts”. Those who contributed to this writing, exposed unique experiences and stretched me beyond any prior mental or spiritual contemplation. The teacher from Israel using the method of “fence building” changed how I view violation of the ten commandments. While all contributions were significant, the story of “Blue” forever changed my perspective to daily life. I will recall this every time I read Psalm 91 in the future. Lifesongs, Mark’s first book, gave us glimpses of how God allowed him to “hear the songs first”. YOUR OWN JESUS, while it points to how some of the lyrics came to be, is much deeper on many levels. If you are a fan of Alter and the Door, this will expand your appreciation tremendously to the meaning of those lyrics. It is not possible to offer a higher recommendation!

A Great Read for all Christians! That will guide you on how to Be The Light for Christ through him! July 31, 2009
                       Reviewer: Ben from Winder, GA

This book was the best I have read all year. It is about how to build an intimate relationship with Jesus. Since I am a fairly new Christian, it has really opened up my eyes on how I should be walking with Christ beyond the alter and door. The testimony’s given in this book are awesome. They help give examples of how God’s Grace and Love for us is sufficient. But, we must have the initiative to take the walk and allow God’s Word to change our lives in the home and community. This book is fantastic from beginning to end. You will not want to put it down; it is a well written book that breaks down for us How to Live For Jesus, and Not for Ourselves. That we must be obedient to the Word and God, to build the intimate relationship that we need to Be a Disciple for Jesus. Personally, my favorite chapter is the fourth entitled NEWNESS. I recommend this book to all Christians, from beginning to mature. Because it will spark a new fire for Jesus in all aspects of your life, so that we can be the Light of the World for Jesus through our good works, so others will give praise to your Father in heaven.
