At Last . . . The Circle Reborn

The story of how Thomas Hunter first entered the Black Forest and forever changed our history began at a time when armies were gathered for a final battle in the valley of Migdon. Green is a story of love, betrayal, and sweeping reversals set within the apocalypse. It is the beginning: the truth behind a saga that has captured the imagination of more than a million readers with the Books of History Chronicles.

But even more, Green brings full meaning to the Circle Series as a whole, reading as both prequel to Black and sequel to White, completing a full circle. This is Book Zero, the Circle Reborn, both the beginning and the end. The preferred starting point for new readers . . . and the perfect climax for the countless fans who’ve experienced Black, Red, and White.

Amazing, yet leaves me questioning still. September 18, 2009
                       Reviewer: Cory from

First of all I would like to say that Ted Dekker is my favorite author. My mom got me Chosen for Christmas one year and my interest developed from there into pure fascination. As a huge Dekker fan, I am quite accustomed to walking away from one of his novels perplexed and filled with questions. I did not expect that to happen in this book, but it did anyway. Green truly is a circular series, with the end also being the beginning. That in itself is confusing, but the way he executed this was the biggest confusing factor. Samuel, Thomas’ son, has lost his way and has led an army against the Horde, who she should love. He has turned his back on Elyon and is ultimately killed by Qurong. When Thomas learns of his son’s death, he is grief-stricken. Not because of his son’s death, but because he had become a Judas of that world, turning his back on Elyon which ultimately prevented him from living with Elyon after death. Thomas cries out to Elyon to give him a way to save his son. Thomas disappears and finds himself on white desert sand in front of the boy, who is Elyon. Elyon tells him that he has a way to save his son, but he will lose all his memories and the choices he makes will affect everyone alive. This is how Green feeds into Black, having Thomas stripped of his memories in Denver, which was/is depending on where one starts in the Circle Black’s first chapter. This, obviously, makes Thomas go in a Circle through time, a never-ending cycle. It confuses me to no end, because it’s as if Thomas never dies and will never end up with Elyon. After hearing someone’s speculation on IV and the Blood books, this may in time be explained. That however is purely speculation, and I fear that this will just never make any sense to me. On another note, this is a great book and Ted did an excellent job tying everything together. Not just with the Circle, but the BoHC in general. Bill, the redhead in Black, is explained in a very unexpected manner. Origins of the infamous character, Marsuvees Black, are also mentioned. Billy, the Sinner, plays a very huge role in the book. Loose ends Ted has put in place in his other novels are pulled together here in a fascinating way that left me reeling. Green truly is a spectacular novel. Lived up to, and beyond my expectations.

Ted Dekker has once again created a masterpiece September 15, 2009
Reviewer: Sarah from Reseda, CA, USA

Green. In my mind there is no way to describe the greatness of this book, of the series, without sounding like a retard. Ted Dekker is an amazing amazing writer. His books are always hard to stop reading but Green especially. He takes things that you wouldn’t have ever thought of and makes them real and very much alive. I love Green because it makes a great last book, but it also grabs your attention to get you reading the rest of the series, it makes you wonder how things came into being. To any of you reading this, I HIGHLY recommend it, to everyone, this isn’t a book that should be overlooked, please pick it up and dive deep into the world of Thomas Hunter, of the Circle. You won’t regret it. I sure didn’t.

GREEN: My favorite color... September 11, 2009
                       Reviewer: Brandon from

Green is Ted’s latest offering in the Books of History Chronicles, wrapping up loose ends from the original Circle trilogy, the Paradise Novels, and the Lost Books. It is the beginning and the end. A tale full of blood, war, and intoxicating love. It may sound like an 0xy-moron, but Ted manages to pull it off with the usual heart-stomping Dekker signature. Some may argue about how dark the story is, or how some plot elements just don’t work, or how many theological problems may pop up here and there. But I think that they’ve lost the meaning of this piece of art in translation. At the heart of this novel are the elegantly-sung words, “You are beautiful… So beautiful… Beautiful.” This novel encapsulates that theme, even in the most hopeless of times, and Dekker brings to light his most soul-wrenching, ambitous story to date. Pick up your copy as soon as you can, and open your eyes to the world of colors, where even the smallest soul is at the largest stake.

The Beginning and the End September 10, 2009
                       Reviewer: Caitlyn from

Green…the beginning and the end. No one quite knew what to expect when Ted announced he was going to write a novel that would be a sequel AND a prequel to the Circle trilogy, but I daresay that never has one of his books been more anticipated. Black, Red, and White introduced us to Thomas Hunter, the man who lives between two worlds. At the same time he is trying to stop a terrorist’s virus from wiping out the human population of our world, he is battling the Shataiki, evil in its rawest form, and their servants the Horde, in Other Earth. While just a few weeks pass in our world, Thomas lives many years in Other Earth and becomes a family man and a great warrior, the leader of the Circle, a people devoted to Elyon. By the time of Green, the virus has been stopped, but Other Earth is facing its toughest battle yet. Division from within threatens to tear the Circle apart and betray the most deeply held values that makes them everything they are. This schism will test the resolve of the faithful and begin the most epic showdown of good and evil Other Earth has ever seen. Reading Green does indeed feel like a return to the world of the Circle, but it is certainly not Black-Red-White all over again. There are several dramatic stylistic differences. First of all, in the original trilogy, the immediate stakes in our world equaled the stakes in the other world. In Green, although much important action takes place in our world, it all revolves around what’s happening in the other world, on Other Earth. I didn’t mind this a bit, but some fans miss the global drama that was played out in Black, Red, and White. Green is also much darker than the original trilogy. It takes us to all new lows of evil that I seriously did not think were possible. Green also introduces fans to a whole new category of characters whose story was first mentioned in the Lost Books and will be further explored in the upcoming Immanuel’s Veins. If you thought the Shataiki were bad, wait till you meet the ones who have knowingly and joyfully sold their souls to them. But while it does indeed plunge new depths, it also soars to new heights…literally. In my opinion, Green contains some of the most beautiful and entrancing scenes in the entire series. I was utterly captivated by the passionate crazy love that was displayed between Thomas and Elyon, and Thomas and his wife Chelise. Ted Dekker certainly can write the most sick and twisted evil you will find anywhere, but he also writes the most incredibly beautiful and perfect love stories with equal intensity. I don’t mean mush. I mean LOVE. So is Green the end or the beginning? …Yes. Green is chronologically the end of the Circle, although elements of it are chronologically at the beginning. It will read as a climax to those who’ve already read the trilogy, and it will also serve as a perfect starting point to those who have yet to experience the Circle. Feedback from new fans and old has been very positive. Green is a fantastical, suspenseful adventure into the heart of darkness and the heights of glory. It is every bit worthy of the name on its cover. Start early in the day—otherwise you might not sleep. Oh, and watch out for the ending—NO ONE saw that one coming.

Beginnings and Endings September 10, 2009
                       Reviewer: Ryan from Baltimore, MD

Green is the gateway book if you will. The begining that draws you into the story or the ending that finalizes the story. Ted has been doing it great for countless books and this one is no exception. Truely a wonderful piece of imagination from one of todays greatest writers.

Round and Round We Go: A Review of Green by Ted Dekker August 14, 2009
                       Reviewer: Andrew from Muskegon, MI

Ted Dekker’s latest fantasy thriller, Green, is referred to as “The Beginning and the End.” It’s been over 5 years since fans first answered the call to “Dive Deep” into an alternate reality where the spiritual has been made clear and evil is as plain as the scabs on your skin. Fans of Dekker’s work are surely familiar with the question “How does this tie in to the rest of his books?” Over the past 5 years, more novels than not have been intertwined into this bigger story called the “Books of History Chronicles”. The Circle Series, Lost Books, and Paradise Novels tell the story of humanity through the lens of extraordinary books that have the power to create history. In essence, “The Word is made Flesh”. With The Books of History Chronicles now including upwards of 15 novels, the larger story has surpassed epic status. Thousands of Ted’s avid readers have been swept into his writing through one of these books. This makes Green his most anticipated novel to date. Green finds the Circle in a desperate place, 10 years since their Savior has last been seen. Many within Elyon’s band of rebels have begun to doubt their core beliefs and practices. How do you love and follow a God that seems distant? Is He truly in control when your world seems in chaos? Dekker poses these age old questions in a fresh light by examining them through the eyes of the Circle. Amidst such deep theological questions, there is still fun to be had. A fast-placed plot full of betrayal, reality-hopping, battles, and hand-to-hand combat serve as the backdrop for the bigger themes of the story. Dekker knows how to balance thought-provoking concepts with non-stop action. After over 2 dozen novels, Ted has it down to an art, and it shows in this latest adventure. Green reads as a fitting end, or perhaps a beginning, to Ted’s signature series. This is must-read fiction for all fans of Dekker. The Circle has proven to be one of the most moving, yet relevant, allegories of all time, and Green lives up to the series in which it belongs. Green reads as both the finale, yet also the prequel to the 2004 masterpieces, Black, Red, and White. Expertly tying in loose story threads from the Paradise Novels and Lost Books, Dekker weaves a truly satisfying conclusion to the series that has spawned a thousand conversations and ignited countless fans to fall deep in love with their Creator.
