Since releasing their album Jesus Freak, dc Talk has emerged as a leader in the pursuit of melding rock 'n' roll with provocative questions of faith. Although various rock predecessors have examined spiritual issues--U2, Van Morrison, and Bob Dylan immediately come to mind--dc Talk has taken the notion to new lengths, both in commercial terms and depth of artistic exploration. Numerous Dove Awards, three Grammy Awards, two platinum albums, one gold album, and two gold-certified long-form videos attest to the group's ability to bridge the gap between religious and secular audiences. Kermit November 2, 2007 Reviewer: Anonymous from
Considering the time when it was released, it was probably an excellent debut at that time, though ithe music is very 80s style, it is good. Tmac has seemingly longer raps than usual. My comments are: Time ta jam has an ol schoo, beatbox on it, some other songs include chessy mc terms such as "yeah, boyy" and such. On the last track, though, Toby in his rap, sounds like kermit the frog a bit!

This album is where DC talk really got it's name. It's Decent Christian Talk, which is most of the album, but still very powerful. Couldn't be more original.
first start August 4, 2005 Reviewer: Anonymous from NY
Every group has to begin somewhere. For DC Talk, they began with this album in 1989. Sure, their later albums were much, much better. But that can be said of just about every artist and group out there.
The guys of DC Talk quickly made a name for themselves with this album. They were the first Christian group to add elements of hip hop into their music, a sound that would culminate with "Free At Last" a few years later.
Besides the hip hop, all the songs have one thing in common. They are very up front with their message. DC Talk made no bones that while they hoped to have a crossover following, they would never sacrifice a message of God to do it. Many people will be turned off by the "in your face" approach of their messgae. But DC Talk makes no apologies for that, nor should they.
For any serious, or even halfway, DC Talk fan, this first album is a classic because it shows you where these guys started. It will help you to appreciate their later work that much more.

This cd sounds more like a Toby Mac Album. This cd was made back in their hip hop days.
Old School Rap October 29, 2004 Reviewer: from North Greenbush, NY
Sure, it's nothing like what they've done since this album, but this is one of their finest. It shows their roots and is definitely quality for the style. If you like old school rap, this is one of the greatest albums you could own.
uhhh... October 13, 2004 Reviewer: Austin from TEXAS
This CD is quite interesting. If you love Dc Talk, you'll probably like some of it, but otherwise, it's old school and for a random person to listen to it, well, he wouldn't
Old but Good October 6, 2004 Reviewer: Kimberly Daniels from Forreston, IL
Because of this being DC Talk's first album, the music is late 80's music. The style is different from the later albums; however, the message is still there. It is a great album.
DC Rap September 1, 2004 Reviewer: Anonymous from Nebraska
Ok, to be honest, I am not the largest fan of rap music. I usually stay as far away as possible. Not so with dcTalk and tobyMac, whom I love to listen to. Although the music on this cd is seriously cheesy late 80s, I do recommend it to very serious dcTalk fans. This is not for everyone. Listen before you buy.
old school August 22, 2004 Reviewer: Anonymous from
Old school music is sweet. This band is the greatest and the first album is a nice one to have.
DC Talks Debut August 20, 2004 Reviewer: Stephen from Brighton (England)
Dc Talk released this a long time ago - and it shows. Its a collectors item alright!! There are still a few good songs but don't expect your average DC Talk music.
